3. Your forties: the watershed decade — you start to feel it
Forty is the inflection point where immune aging shifts from 'invisible' to 'perceptible.'
Several changes are happening simultaneously. First, thymic function falls to about thirty percent — meaning new T cell supply can no longer compensate for declining immune diversity. When you encounter a new infection, initial response time begins measurably lengthening, and recovery speed slows in ways you can actually feel. Second, existing memory T cells start showing quality problems: aging T cells recognize threats less accurately, proliferate more slowly, and begin secreting more pro-inflammatory signals rather than performing precise targeted killing. Third, the chronic inflammation baseline starts measurably rising — CRP and IL-6 resting levels in your forties are typically twenty to forty percent higher than in your thirties.
These changes manifest most directly in what you start noticing: colds healing more slowly, wounds taking longer, illnesses that you once pushed through now actually knocking you down.
On vaccine response, your forties are another watershed. 4. After fifty: inflammaging accelerates, cancer surveillance starts to slide
If the forties are the watershed, the fifties are the true acceleration phase.
Two things become more pronounced simultaneously.
First, inflammaging enters its acceleration period. Scientists who study the immune systems of centenarians found a consistent pattern: these healthy long-lived people have immune aging curves that are much flatter than average. Their immune function at seventy sometimes approaches the level of an average person at sixty. Their CRP at sixty is sometimes lower than an average person's at fifty.
How did they do it? No special genetics, no miraculous supplements. What they had: regular moderate-intensity exercise (one hundred fifty minutes a week, sustained for decades); sleep as a non-negotiable priority (never treating sleep as something to sacrifice); a diverse diet (especially a wide variety of plant foods); and low chronic stress or effective stress management (high-quality social connections; activities that genuinely allow them to decompress).
Not one of these is expensive. Not one is high-tech. Every single one is something you can choose today.
One specific strategy very few people know about: regular vaccination isn't only about protecting against a specific disease — it's also an active intervention for keeping the immune memory library engaged.
