Deep sleep is concentrated in the first three to four hours after sleep onset and is tightly synchronized with your circadian rhythm. Falling asleep before 11 PM is the most effective way to protect deep sleep. If you fall asleep at 1 AM and sleep until 9 AM — eight hours total — the proportion of that sleep spent in deep sleep stages is significantly lower than if you'd fallen asleep at 11 PM. Deep sleep's window is set by the biological clock, not by when you happen to lie down.
