After a B cell receives the signal that antibodies are needed, it transforms into a highly specialized cell: the plasma cell.
Plasma cells no longer patrol, no longer identify enemies. Their entire energy goes into one thing: making antibodies. Every second, a plasma cell can secrete more than 2,000 antibody molecules — a staggering production rate.
Short-lived plasma cells produce massive antibodies during acute infection, then disappear. Long-lived plasma cells set up permanent residence in bone marrow, producing low-level protective antibodies continuously for years — even a lifetime. The long-term protection after vaccination comes from these old factories in bone marrow.
