If you have allergies, your body contains a cell that's like a pre-loaded bomb waiting to be detonated at any moment. That's the mast cell.
Mast cells guard the skin, airways, intestines, and other tissues in contact with the outside world. Their surface carries large amounts of allergen-specific antibodies (IgE). When an allergen arrives, IgE recognizes it and immediately triggers the mast cell to release all stored inflammatory substances — histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins — producing the familiar allergy symptoms.
Mast cells react so fast you can feel them within seconds. This speed is invaluable against real threats; against pollen mistaken for an enemy, it's the root of allergic reactions.
