Macrophages are the immune system's sanitation workers — but their job goes far beyond cleanup

The name 'macrophage' literally translates as 'big eater.' Their job: engulf invaders, dead cells, and waste — then digest it all.
But macrophages are far more than janitors. They're also scouts: after swallowing an enemy, they display its characteristic fragments and tell T cells exactly which target to attack.
Macrophages also launch and resolve inflammation — they both sound the battle alarm and, after the fight, sweep the battlefield and issue the ceasefire, letting tissue repair begin. Understanding them is the key to understanding why chronic inflammation and cancer are both so closely connected to these cells.

Every organ has its specialized resident macrophage: brain (microglia), liver (Kupffer cells), lungs (alveolar macrophages). Organ-specific chronic inflammation is often the result of local macrophages persistently stuck in M1 activation.
