Dendritic cells are the immune system's most important intelligence relay
In the army of the immune system, one cell type is dedicated to gathering intelligence and delivering it where it's most needed. That's the dendritic cell.
When a virus or bacterium invades, dendritic cells are first on scene — capturing the invader, analyzing it, extracting its identifying characteristics, then rushing to the nearest lymph node to hand this intelligence to T cells. They show T cells what the enemy looks like and how to fight it.
Without this relay, adaptive immune response can never be activated. This makes dendritic cells the most critical bridge between innate and adaptive immunity — and the hottest target in cancer vaccine and allergy treatment research.
