Fifty years from now, what we today think impossible will be taken for granted
The previous article predicted things almost certain to happen within ten years.
This article goes much further. Fifty years is a generation's span. If you're twenty today, you'll be seventy in fifty years; if you're fifty today, your children or grandchildren will be living in that world.
At this time scale, we're not making predictions — predictions require evidence, and what we're doing here is more imagination. But this imagination has a foundation: it starts from current scientific trajectories and asks not 'will this work?' but 'if obstacles are overcome one by one, where is the destination?'
Some imaginings will come true, some will materialize in completely different forms, some may forever remain fantasy. But science's most fascinating aspect has never been what has already happened, but the light at the edge of what is happening and what might happen.
