Partially — but not fully equivalent. Research shows that after acute sleep deprivation, two to three nights of adequate sleep allow NK cell activity to substantially return to baseline. But the cumulative effects of long-term chronic sleep deprivation (years of insufficient sleep) — such as accelerated inflammaging and faster telomere shortening — cannot be completely reversed by a few nights of catch-up sleep. Long-term, establishing stable adequate sleep habits is more effective than 'borrow-then-repay.'
Do sleep medications affect sleep's immune repair function?
Depends on the medication type. Benzodiazepines (diazepam) and non-benzodiazepines (zolpidem) help with sleep onset but suppress deep sleep (SWS) quality and may weaken immune repair effects.
