The Cancer Immunoediting Theory
Your immune system isn't only eliminating cancer cells — it's simultaneously 'training' them to become more dangerous
This is one of tumor immunology's most profound paradoxes: the immune system exists to protect you, but in the process of hunting cancer cells, it simultaneously and unknowingly 'trains' them to be harder to eliminate. Just as improper antibiotic use 'trains' resistant bacteria — immune pressure is a powerful selection pressure that filters out immune-evading cancer cell subclones, letting them emerge victorious in the survival competition.
This process is called 'Cancer Immunoediting.' Formally proposed by Robert Schreiber in 2002, it's a major upgrade of immune surveillance theory — moving from a binary 'immune system either eliminates the tumor or fails' to a dynamic three-phase evolutionary model (the 3E model): Elimination, Equilibrium, Escape.
