Solving the Cost and Access Problem
Editing out a cell’s own identity markers can make one batch of donor cells safe for any patient — turning a custom-built product into an off-the-shelf one. NK cells are naturally suited to this, since they don’t cause the rejection problem T cells do.
The Real Frontier: Solid Tumors
The physical barrier, the fuel-starved environment, and a tumor’s ability to hide its targets all still block CAR-T in 90% of cancers — each barrier now has its own engineering fix in active development.
NK + CAR-T, Working Together
CAR-T cells and NK cells patrol for different tumor disguises — together they close the escape route a tumor would otherwise use against either one alone.
IN-BODY CAR-T & THE 2030 OUTLOOK
- A 2022 proof-of-concept showed T cells can be reprogrammed directly inside the body via injection, skipping weeks of lab manufacturing — cost potential dropping from $300k+ to roughly $1,000–10,000. Human trials are expected by 2025–2027.
