We often worry about the immune system overshooting. But the other side is equally important: sometimes immune attack is insufficient, and pathogens take root, causing chronic infections or prolonged illness.
Immune attack can be insufficient for several reasons: immunosenescence from aging, malnutrition (deficiency of protein and micronutrients), chronic sleep deprivation and stress, the immune-suppressing effects of certain medications, primary immunodeficiency diseases from genetic causes.
