In the 1950s, two scientists — Frank Macfarlane Burnet and Lewis Thomas — each independently proposed a hypothesis that seemed audacious to the point of absurdity: one of the immune system's core functions was to continuously monitor and eliminate cancer cells that spontaneously arise in the body.
