Sugar and Immunity
After drinking that cup of bubble tea, your immune system quietly took a punch
编辑部精选 · 一分钟理解
Sugar is bad — you probably know that. But 'where exactly is it bad' is something most people can't articulate clearly.
For the immune system, refined sugar's effects are multi-layered: in the hours after blood glucose spikes, it suppresses immune cells' phagocytic capacity; with long-term excess intake, it elevates chronic inflammation; it disrupts gut microbiome balance, weakening the gut barrier; and it promotes visceral fat accumulation, indirectly generating more inflammatory signals.
Every layer is a real, molecularly-mechanized immune damage. This isn't saying you can't eat anything sweet. It's saying: if you're asking 'why is my immunity poor,' sugar intake is a question that needs to be answered honestly.
核心要点
01
Refined sugar damages immunity through three pathways simultaneously: acute immune cell efficiency suppression (blood glucose competes with vitamin C uptake), chronic inflammation elevation (AGEs-RAGE pathway), and gut-immune axis disruption (feeding pathogens, damaging barrier).
02
In the hours after blood glucose spikes, neutrophil phagocytic capacity drops approximately forty to fifty percent — eating sugar when sick is reducing efficiency exactly when immunity needs to work hardest.
03
Fructose (especially HFCS) is more insidiously harmful than glucose: promotes visceral fat accumulation, produces uric acid to trigger the inflammasome, and glycates at ten times the rate of glucose.
04
Glycation reactions (AGEs) don't only damage blood vessels — they directly damage immune cell molecular mechanisms, accelerating immune cell aging. High-sugar diet is an immune aging accelerator.
05
Primary intervention: reduce liquid sugar (sugary beverages) — the single largest refined sugar source and the easiest change to make an impact.
06
WHO recommends free sugars below ten percent of daily calories (approximately fifty grams), ideally below five percent (twenty-five grams). One cup of bubble tea already exceeds the daily limit.
