Every day, cells in your body undergo gene mutations. Most have no significance; a few will head toward cancer. In the vast majority of cases, the immune system clears these cells before they form tumors. You feel nothing and know nothing. This process happens every day.
How does the immune system do it? Cancer cells come from your own cells — they don't have the obvious 'foreign' markers that bacteria and viruses do. How does the immune system distinguish 'a cell that's becoming cancerous' from 'a cell working normally'?
The answer involves two complementary recognition systems: one based on 'are you displaying the correct ID?', the other based on 'are you sending out a distress signal?'
