The immune system sometimes overshoots — and that can be more dangerous than the pathogen itself
Many people know that weak immunity causes disease. Fewer realize that immunity running out of control — overshooting — can be equally dangerous.
The most dramatic example is cytokine storm: the immune system detects a threat, releases massive inflammatory signals, those signals keep amplifying and losing control, and eventually the immune system starts attacking its own tissues. Much of the lung damage in severe COVID-19 patients was caused this way — not by virus directly killing cells, but by immune collateral damage.
