What would happen if the immune system only knew how to attack? The answer: it would treat the body's own cells as enemies and cause autoimmune disease.
To prevent this, the immune system has a cell dedicated to applying the brakes: regulatory T cells — Treg cells.
Their job is to monitor other immune cells, and when they detect someone attacking too aggressively or hitting the wrong target, they send signals to stop. Without Treg cells, we would die within a very short time from autoimmune reactions. The immune system doesn't only need to know how to attack — it needs to know when to stop.
