Have you ever been stung by a bee, or eaten something and suddenly broken out in hives from head to toe? A specific cell is playing a key role behind this: the basophil.
Basophils are the least numerous white cells in blood — but their power is anything but small. Once they encounter a specific allergen, they rapidly release massive amounts of histamine and other inflammatory substances, triggering the familiar allergic response: itch, swelling, runny nose, rash.
Basophils are the immune system's alarm system. Against parasites, that alarm is very useful. In modern society, it sometimes fires a false alarm — making a huge fuss over harmless pollen or food.

Basophils are the least numerous blood white cells (only 0.5–1%), but through IgE arming and rapid degranulation, they're a key player in initiating and amplifying allergic reactions.

Sensitization: first allergen exposure → IgE produced → IgE binds to basophil surface; re-exposure → IgE cross-linked → degranulation within seconds, releasing histamine, leukotrienes, PAF.

Degranulation consequences: histamine causes vasodilation and itch (antihistamine target); leukotrienes cause airway spasm (montelukast target); PAF participates in the circulatory collapse of anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is the result of basophils and mast cells simultaneously degranulating throughout the body. Epinephrine is the only first-line rescue drug; people with severe allergy history should always carry an EpiPen.

Basophils' true evolutionary value is fighting parasites (especially ticks and intestinal helminths). In modern, low-parasite environments, this mechanism loses its correct target and misfiles against harmless allergens.
