How Has Immunology Changed Human Lifespan?
From 35 to 80: of that lifespan extension, how much did immunology contribute?
Human average lifespan, over the past two hundred years, made a leap unprecedented in human history: in 1800, global average life expectancy was about 29 years; today it is 73 years — extended by about 44 years.
Where did these 44 years come from? A large portion came from declining infectious disease mortality. And in that decline, immunology deserves major credit: vaccines eliminated or controlled smallpox, polio, and measles that once killed enormous numbers of children; antibody therapy transformed autoimmune diseases from disabling-and-fatal to manageable chronic conditions; checkpoint therapy transformed some cancers from fatal diseases to chronic conditions.
