Does a positive autoantibody test mean I have an autoimmune disease?
Not necessarily. Low-level autoantibodies (like low-titer ANA) are common in healthy older adults and don't always indicate active autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease diagnosis requires integrating clinical symptoms, physical findings, and multiple laboratory indicators. If autoantibodies are positive but there are no clinical symptoms, discuss monitoring frequency with your physician rather than panicking.
What does M-protein in an older adult's protein electrophoresis mean?
M-protein is produced by abnormal proliferation of a single B cell clone (or plasma cell clone). In older adults, the presence of M-protein without symptoms is called Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS). Its incidence rises with age (approximately three to five percent of adults over seventy). MGUS itself isn't cancer, but carries a small annual risk of transforming into multiple myeloma (roughly one percent per year). Regular physician-guided monitoring is warranted.
Can infusing young people's plasma improve antibody quality in older adults?
