Your antibody factory is quietly lowering its quality standards with every passing year
You might assume that if you have antibodies in your blood, you have protection.
That assumption is incomplete. Antibody protection depends not only on quantity, but on quality — how tightly they bind to their targets (affinity), and whether they're targeting the right sites (specificity).
With age, B cells — the antibody factories — show deterioration across multiple dimensions. The antibodies they produce aren't just fewer in number; they're also discounted in quality: lower affinity, reduced specificity, weaker virus-neutralizing capacity.
This explains why older adults who receive vaccines can show acceptable antibody titers on paper, yet experience less protection than expected — the 'products' they're manufacturing are running to lower specifications.
