1
Immune cells age and start secreting inflammatory signals (called SASP).
2
Chronic low-grade inflammation becomes the body's new 'normal' background state.
3
Those signals damage nearby healthy cells, pushing them into aging too.
4
More aged cells means more inflammatory secretion — the cycle intensifies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between inflammaging and ordinary 'inflammation'?
Fundamentally different. Ordinary inflammation (acute inflammation) is the immune system's normal response to infection or injury: intense, rapid, purposeful, self-resolving. Inflammaging is chronic, low-grade, diffuse: no clear trigger, low intensity but never subsiding, no 'cure' target. Both involve inflammatory signals, but the mechanisms, intensity, and consequences are completely different.
Can blood tests confirm I have inflammaging?
These tests can indicate the possibility, but not confirm it. Elevated hs-CRP and IL-6 suggest chronic inflammation, but these elevations can have other causes (recent infection, autoimmune disease). More accurately, these indicators need to be interpreted after ruling out acute factors, across multiple tests, in the context of age and lifestyle background. A single value has limited meaning; a persistently rising trend has genuine signaling value.
Can anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, aspirin) fight inflammaging?
Not recommended for this purpose. Although these drugs do have anti-inflammatory effects, long-term use carries significant side effects (GI bleeding, renal damage). Low-dose aspirin was studied for cardiovascular primary prevention, but recent large trials (including ASPREE) found that for healthy older adults, the risks of long-term aspirin may outweigh the benefits. The safest and most effective path for inflammaging intervention remains lifestyle modification, not pharmacological suppression.
Normal weight but lots of visceral fat — can I still have inflammaging?
Absolutely — and this situation is more easily overlooked. Visceral fat (accumulated around abdominal organs) is a potent inflammatory tissue, continuously secreting IL-6, TNF-α, and other pro-inflammatory factors. People with normal weight but large waist circumference (men above 90 cm, women above 80 cm) — so-called 'normal weight obesity' — may carry inflammatory burdens as high as overweight individuals. Waist circumference reflects visceral fat far better than the bathroom scale.
Can young people have inflammaging?
Inflammaging typically becomes significant after forty, but 'accelerated entry into an inflammaging state' can happen in younger people — particularly those with chronic sleep deprivation, chronic high stress, severe obesity, or prolonged sedentary behavior. Conversely, lifestyle-healthy older adults may have inflammatory markers lower than lifestyle-unhealthy middle-aged people. Chronological age is not the same as immune age.
