A Prize Awarded Three Days Too Late
Ralph Steinman’s Nobel was announced on October 6, 2011. He had died three days earlier, on October 3 — the committee didn’t know when they made their decision. It remains the only Nobel Prize ever awarded posthumously.
Demoted, Then Vindicated
Katalin Karikó was demoted from her tenure track in the 2000s and was later diagnosed with breast cancer, but kept working on mRNA anyway. Her key 2005 paper drew almost no attention at the time. By 2021, over 3 billion people had received the technology she refused to give up on.

Why are female immunologists relatively rare in this list?
This reflects the systematic exclusion of women from scientific research historically. Before the mid-twentieth century, women had almost no access to mainstream medical and scientific research institutions, and even those with contributions were often listed behind male colleagues or overlooked. Karikó's case (demoted for not getting external funding, work unrecognized for many years) also partly reflects these structural barriers. Today immunology has large numbers of outstanding female scientists (like Polly Matzinger, Jennifer Doudna, and others), but historical inequality was real.
Are there important immunology contributors who have not received the Nobel Prize?
Several. Charles Janeway (predicted TLR, died 2003, missed 2011 Nobel) is the most famous regret. Polly Matzinger (Danger Model theory) has not yet won, though her work's influence on innate immunity is profound. Max Cooper (discovered B cells) and Jacques Miller (discovered thymus as T cell development site) received the Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research in 2019 but never the Nobel, despite their discoveries being one of adaptive immunology's foundations — universally considered Nobel-caliber contributions.
Did Köhler and Milstein regret not patenting monoclonal antibodies?
Milstein expressed in multiple interviews that he didn't regret not patenting, believing scientific knowledge should be public property. He felt his work had been recognized through the Nobel Prize and international academic honors. From a broader perspective, this decision may have accelerated the entire field's development, ultimately producing social value far exceeding any patent revenue. This case continues to be a classic citation in intellectual property policy and scientific incentive mechanism debates.
