Frequently Asked Questions
I feel stressed but can't identify a specific cause. Does that still count?
Yes โ and diffuse, hard-to-name anxiety is often harder to manage than stress with a clear source, and produces equally sustained HPA axis activation. Persistent uncertainty, a sense of loss of control, always being 'on call' โ all of these generate the same cortisol elevation as specific, identifiable stressors. If you're chronically fatigued, can't truly relax, and sleep poorly, those are signs of a chronically activated HPA axis that deserve serious attention.
Work stress is unavoidable. What's the fastest way to help my immune system recover?
Three things with rapid onset effects: ten to twenty minutes of daily diaphragmatic breathing or mindfulness (inhale four counts, hold four counts, exhale six counts โ the simplest version to start); a fixed sleep schedule (the most efficient single intervention for restoring cortisol rhythm); and twenty minutes of daily walking (the most sustainable exercise form, requiring no equipment). Each works independently; together, the effects compound โ and all three are free.
What's the relationship between depression and the immune system?
It's close, and bidirectional. More than fifty percent of people with clinical depression show measurable elevations in inflammatory markers โ particularly IL-6 and CRP. There is a compelling and active scientific hypothesis that a subset of depression may be fundamentally an inflammatory disorder with psychiatric expression, which would also explain why anti-inflammatory lifestyle interventions (regular exercise, omega-3 supplementation, dietary changes) show adjunctive benefit in some patients. Conversely, depression itself compounds immune damage, creating a cycle of inflammation feeding depression and depression feeding inflammation.
If I've been under chronic stress for years, can my immune system actually recover?
Yes โ but it takes time and consistency. Research shows that exercise-driven immune improvements become measurable in blood markers within four to eight weeks; NK cell activity improvements from MBSR programs appear by the eight-week endpoint. Telomere recovery is slower, but studies have shown that sustained lifestyle changes (regular exercise, mindfulness) can slow the rate of telomere shortening and, in some metrics, show improvement. The earlier you start, the better the recovery.
