The impact on overall immune function in adults is typically small — other lymphoid tissue and the gut immune system can compensate for the appendix's role. But some research suggests appendectomy in early childhood may be associated with mildly elevated risk of certain later infections, as the appendix's participation in early gut immune training is missed. In most cases, acute appendicitis requires appendectomy, and that decision is correct. Understanding the appendix's immune value doesn't change the emergency calculus.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (bone marrow transplant) is fundamentally about rebuilding the immune system's production line. By transplanting donor hematopoietic stem cells, the recipient's bone marrow is enabled to restart producing healthy blood and immune cells. This is the core treatment for leukemia, aplastic anemia, and other hematopoietic diseases. Post-transplant, a patient's immune system is essentially rebuilding from zero — all previous vaccines must be re-administered, because immune memory disappears along with the original immune cells.

No clinically validated method currently exists to directly reverse thymic atrophy. Several research directions show some promise: IL-7 cytokine therapy (IL-7 is a critical growth factor for thymic cells), growth hormone therapy (small studies show transient partial restoration of some thymic tissue), and gene therapy research. But all remain at early stages. Currently the most viable strategy remains using lifestyle interventions to slow the aging of existing immune cells — and regular exercise has the strongest evidence for preserving residual thymic function.

Chemotherapy drugs work by killing rapidly dividing cells — cancer cells are the primary target, but rapidly dividing hematopoietic stem cells in bone marrow are also affected. Chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression reduces white blood cell production (especially neutrophils), placing patients at high infection risk. This is why chemotherapy patients need close blood count monitoring, prophylactic antibiotics when needed, and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to promote white cell recovery during severe bone marrow suppression.
