Why don't I want to eat when I'm sick? Should I force myself?
Loss of appetite is a physiological response from IL-1 and TNF-ฮฑ acting on the hypothalamic appetite center โ a deliberate immune strategy to redirect energy from digestion to the immune battle. You don't need to force large amounts of food. Hydration (water, electrolyte drinks, light broth) matters more than caloric intake during acute illness. Should I exercise when I have a cold?
It depends on symptom severity. Mild cold only (runny nose, mild sore throat, no fever, no body aches, no profound fatigue): light activity like a gentle walk is generally fine. If you have fever, significant body aches, or profound fatigue โ these are IL-1 and TNF-ฮฑ signals commanding rest โ you should genuinely rest. Forcing exercise diverts energy from the immune battle and extends recovery time.
Do cytokine tests have clinical value? Should healthy people get them?
For routine monitoring in healthy individuals, cytokine testing is not currently standard practice. High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) โ which the liver produces in response to IL-6 โ is the most practical and widely available marker for tracking chronic inflammatory status. For healthy individuals, an annual hs-CRP alongside routine bloodwork is sufficient. Full cytokine panels are primarily used in research and in clinical management of specific conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and severe infection.
