When the immune system begins attacking the 'insulation' around your brain's wiring

The electrical wires in your home have a layer of insulation around them. Strip that insulation off, and electrical signals short-circuit, scatter, and cut out.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is exactly this kind of disaster — occurring inside the nervous system. The immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the insulating sheath around nerve fibers. When myelin is damaged, nerve signal conduction slows, distorts, or cuts out entirely.
The result: a patient's vision, limb strength, sense of balance, cognitive capacity, bladder control — any function that depends on nerve signal transmission — can be affected. And the location and severity of damage vary enormously from person to person.
MS is the most common autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, affecting approximately 2.8 million people globally, most common between ages 20 and 40, with female prevalence approximately three times male.
