Is the sugar in fruit also harmful?
Fructose in whole fruit is fundamentally different from HFCS in processed foods. Whole fruit contains large amounts of dietary fiber, dramatically slowing fructose absorption speed and reducing blood glucose peaks; it also contains antioxidant polyphenols that can neutralize some glycation stress. Observational research consistently shows consuming whole fruit correlates with reduced chronic disease risk, while juice drinks (fiber removed) correlate with increased risk. So: eat fruit, don't drink juice — that's the correct distinction.
Are artificial sweeteners harmful to immunity?
Direct immune effects of artificial sweeteners are under-researched and controversial. Some research finds certain artificial sweeteners may affect gut microbiome composition (sucralose, saccharin). Natural sweeteners (erythritol, xylitol) currently have more neutral data on microbiome effects. Sweeteners can reduce refined sugar intake, which has value, but shouldn't be understood as 'zero-risk' options; ideally, overall dependence on sweetness is gradually reduced.
I already eat very little sugar, but inflammation markers are still elevated — why?
Chronic inflammation has multiple sources — visceral fat, sleep deprivation, chronic stress, gut microbiome dysbiosis, vitamin D deficiency, tobacco — each can independently elevate inflammation. Reducing sugar is an important step but not the only one. If inflammation markers remain elevated after reducing sugar, systematically evaluating other factors is needed.
Do you need to eat sugar before and after exercise?
Sugar use during exercise is a different context from daily refined sugar intake. During high-intensity exercise, sugar (especially glucose, maltodextrin-class sports supplements) is a reasonable energy source; muscles' sugar uptake at this time doesn't depend on insulin, and effects on blood glucose differ from resting state. But for ordinary-intensity daily exercise (brisk walking, cycling, light strength training), 'replenishing energy' with sugary sports drinks is usually caloric excess rather than necessary.
