A Discovery With No Communication

Two labs, working independently on opposite sides of the world, find the same thing at the same time: untrained lymphocytes that kill tumor cells on contact, with no prior exposure needed. They name them Natural Killer cells.
The ‘Missing Self’ Logic

The real logic gets worked out over a decade later: NK cells don’t look for enemy markers at all — they check for a ‘missing self’ ID tag (MHC-I). A healthy cell displaying its tag gets an inhibitory signal and is left alone; a cell that’s lost its tag loses that protection and gets killed.
THE DOUBLE ENCIRCLEMENT
This creates an evolutionary trap: hiding the ID tag to dodge T cells exposes a tumor to NK cells instead; keeping the tag to dodge NK cells exposes it to T cells instead. There’s no way out, regardless of which way the tumor turns.
