In 1796, an English country doctor ran an experiment.
He had noticed something: milkmaids who had caught cowpox — a mild disease that made cows sick — almost never got smallpox afterward.
Smallpox was one of the most terrifying killers of the age. It took countless lives, leaving survivors with permanent scarred faces. The milkmaids' clear skin was a mystery in that era — until Jenner decided to unravel it.
He took the cowpox pus from a milkmaid's hand and inoculated it into an 8-year-old boy. Then he did something that would be completely unethical by today's standards: he inoculated the child with smallpox virus — to test whether the boy was truly protected.
The child was fine.
