Can you exercise when sick?
Depends on the situation. If symptoms are only above the neck (nasal congestion, mild sore throat), low-intensity exercise usually has no problem and may even help symptom relief. If there's fever, muscle aches, or whole-body fatigue, complete rest is recommended — exercise adds extra burden on an already fully-loaded immune system and may prolong the course.
If I can only do resistance training without aerobic, will immune benefits be much less?
Resistance training also has positive immune effects, mainly through myokine secretion and improving body composition. But current evidence shows aerobic exercise's impact on NK cell activity and inflammation markers is more direct and consistent. Ideally combine both; if only one can be chosen, aerobic has more comprehensive immune evidence.
Starting exercise at an older age — are there still immune benefits?
Yes, very clearly. Multiple studies show adults over sixty-five who begin regular exercise have considerable NK cell activity and vaccine response improvement within six months. Starting at sixty benefits more than starting at eighty, but starting at eighty still has meaning. Late is better than never.

Post-exercise protein intake is mainly for muscle repair and synthesis. But protein is also raw material for immune cell synthesis — antibodies, cytokines, and immune cells all need amino acids. People with long-term insufficient protein intake have impaired immune function. Post-exercise protein supplementation benefits both immunity and muscle recovery.
