Can vitamin D prevent COVID-19?
Vitamin D cannot prevent COVID-19 infection, but adequate vitamin D is associated with lower severe illness and mortality rates. Current consensus: maintaining adequate vitamin D levels (not mega-dose 'treatment') is reasonable immune support, and should not replace vaccines and other preventive measures.
Should calcium be supplemented together with vitamin D?
Calcium supplementation itself depends on individual circumstances; not everyone needs extra calcium (excess calcium may increase kidney stone and cardiovascular calcification risks). If supplementing both vitamin D and calcium, adding vitamin K2 is recommended — K2 directs calcium to bone (rather than soft tissue and blood vessels), making the three-way combination most logical for bone and immune health.
I've been taking vitamin D for a long time but levels are still insufficient — why?

Will getting more sun increase skin cancer risk?
Excessive and prolonged unprotected exposure to intense UV, especially at high UV index midday, does increase skin cancer risk. But ten to twenty minutes of moderate daily sun during non-peak hours carries very low risk. A balanced approach: get sun during lower UV-index periods (before 10am or after 3pm), duration moderate, then apply sun protection afterward. Completely avoiding sunlight also carries real immune health costs.
