Enormously. Genetics sets your ceiling and floor, but your current lifestyle determines where between those extremes you're actually operating. For most commercially marketed immune supplements, the answer in rigorous human trials is: not meaningfully, in already-healthy adults. Two notable exceptions with real evidence: vitamin D when there's a genuine deficiency (serum 25(OH)D below 30 nmol/L — roughly thirty to forty percent of adults have insufficient levels); and zinc, which has modest supportive evidence during acute infections. Both fill gaps rather than upgrade a functioning system. Getting the foundations right produces effects that outrun any single supplement.

Not at all — and often the opposite is true. Moderate childhood infection experience is valuable for building immune memory and training innate immune responses. Children raised in excessively sanitized environments with minimal microbial exposure tend to have higher rates of allergy and autoimmune disease in adulthood — this is the hygiene hypothesis. Frequent childhood illnesses may simply mean your immune system encountered many pathogens and built a richer memory library.

Practical indirect indicators include: regular, well-formed bowel movements (Bristol Stool Form Scale types 3–4 are optimal); minimal GI symptoms like bloating or irregular habits; and good tolerance across a wide variety of foods. If you've had repeated antibiotic courses or eat very little fiber and vegetables, your microbiome almost certainly needs active rehabilitation.
