We know infection causes fever, but how exactly does it happen? Does the virus directly raise your temperature?
No. Fever is actually an extraordinarily precise physiological process — entirely initiated actively by your own body. When immune cells detect a pathogen, they release a class of substances called pyrogens (primarily interleukin-1 and prostaglandins). These substances reach the hypothalamus in the brain, which resets the body temperature target — say, from 37°C to 39°C.
Then your body begins generating heat: muscles start shivering, blood vessels constrict, you feel cold — until temperature reaches the new set point. Fever isn't a loss of control. It's a precisely controlled immune strategy.
