Knowing what an immune cell 'is' isn't enough — you also need to know where it is

Imagine a city's security system — you can know how many police, security guards, and patrol vehicles are in the city, and their identities and equipment. But if you don't know where they are, you can never understand how this security system operates: why does a particular district always have problems? Why is the crime rate especially low in a certain area?
Traditional immunology analysis methods — including flow cytometry and single-cell sequencing — answer 'what immune cells exist' and 'what is their gene state,' but lose a critical piece of information: where these cells are in the tissue.
Spatial Immunology answers precisely this long-neglected question. It combines gene expression information with cells' physical locations, letting us for the first time see clearly: in a tumor tissue, are T cells clustered in the tumor core or excluded to the margins?
