The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to two scientists: American James Allison and Japanese Tasuku Honjo.
They each independently discovered 'brake molecules' on T cells — CTLA-4 and PD-1.
These molecules normally prevent the immune system from over-activating, protecting self-tissue. But tumor cells learned to press these brakes to escape immune attack.
Allison and Honjo's work ultimately taught humanity to release these brakes — and the resulting therapies gave some previously incurable advanced melanoma patients sustained remissions lasting over ten years.
